Giving Thanks to Facebook – Sometimes You Have to Just Stand Back and Look
Posted on 12. May, 2010 by Samantha Gardner in Life Management
Once in a while, it just hits me.
Life moves very fast if you’re not paying attention to it.
Seems like my nieces were just little girls. My nephews were toddlers. My son was a newborn. And I had lots of younger cousins.
The reality of how life has changed a bit hit me on Facebook of all places this morning. Yep – social media has caught on with the whole family now.
Let see – my nieces are young ladies with Facebook accounts and friends galore. I get to see glimpse of their lives even thought I live a thousand miles away. I am seeing them grow up on the computer.
My nephews really hit me. I saw boys today. In full hockey uniforms on a real big boys hockey team. Cool hair and all. Living 2000 miles away and seeing them even less often – the changes every time a new picture goes up reminds me how quickly kids grow and develop. Thank you Facebook.
Younger cousins are now getting married, graduating from college or are in high school. I don’t even see a huge age gap with many of them anymore. I know I am closer with many of them because we all have Facebook than I would have been 15 years ago.
My son is now one of the little guys out playing ball, riding this bike and swimming in the pool. I get to share his life with my family and friends, even when they are miles away. They get to see us. They get to know us better.
The whole thing has now got me about to give Facebook lesson to my Mom and Grandma – they are missing out on the family stuff and are tired of hear – well, we posted the pictures on Facebook. (My Dad, Mother-in-law and Father-in-law already joined us all at Facebook).
Facebook has created a way for families living all over the globe to connect together. For distant family members to meet and know each other. For long lost friends to reconnect.
And to see the real time changes, not just the holiday photos and visits anymore.
Taking the time connect with loved ones is important. It is key to life and Facebook can make it a bit easier.
Thanks Facebook.

Thanks for this sincere post. Facebook is a powerful marketing platform. It’s wonderful to be reminded about its power to connect on a human level.

Do kids, grandkids, nieces and so one actually **like** to see their grandparents or aunts and uncles on their Facebook pages… or do they feel like their privacy is being breached? Just wondering how differing teens might view this.

Point well taken Samantha. What I find particularly funny is that my nieces and nephews are older teens and in college. I get to see through Facebook, what they did the night before…..
Sometimes I laugh. Sometimes I’m shocked that they’d write what they wrote in a place where their grandparents can see it.
It’s a Brave New World..

Richard – You have got a point. I am sure I am not seeing it all with the Privacy settings and private messages. I know that may of my younger family members know that if you can’t have Grandma read it – no one else should be reading it either. It is about being safe and smart.
